“Lot 18!” The auctioneer called as his assistant placed a vase upon a pedestal next to him. “A glass vase from the late seventeenth or early sixteenth century. Once owned by the Queen of England, it was stolen from her chambers and lost until now. Let the bidding begin at fifteen thousand.”
Duncan McLeod’s brown eyes lit up when he saw the vase. Smiling, he remembered the beautiful lady who had hand painted it for the queen. Her eyes had been the color of the ocean and her hair had been black as midnight. Brianna Warren. Confidently, he raised his marker to bid.
To his relief, no one else really seemed to want it, and he won it easily. As he sauntered over to collect his piece after the auction, he was stunned to see the woman running the table. She looked so much like Brianna that he had to do a double take. Moving closer, he learned that she wasn’t an Immortal. He reached the table and took her hand.
“Duncan MacLeod.”
The brunette shook his hand and smiled. “Prue Halliwell.” She turned away and collected the vase. “I believe this is yours, Mr. MacLeod.” She titled her head as he took it. “Just out of curiosity, why did you bid on it? Most people would’ve passed it by.”
Duncan laughed. “One of my ancestors knew the painter.”
Her blue eyes widened. “Really? My ancestor was the one who painted it.” She pointed to the base. “There’s her signature right there.”
“Really? Small world, isn’t it?”
Prue nodded in agreement. “Yes, it is.”
He hesitated for a moment, and then asked. “Would you like to have dinner?”
“Sure. Give me thirty minutes, and I’ll be ready to go.”
