Tru Davies settled into the fluffy cushions of the couch in Davis’s office. It felt good to actually relax and not have to worry about the day restarting. That was one good thing about living a day twice and saving a life; odds were the day wouldn’t restart again.

“Good work today, Tru,” Davis said shyly as he walked in. Tru looked up and noticed how disheveled he was. His brown hair was sticking out everywhere; even his beard didn’t look trimmed. His white button-down shirt was untucked and his eyes seemed hollow from worry.

“I couldn’t have done it without you.”

Davis blushed and shuffled papers around his desk. “It was nothing.”

She watched him for a long moment. Yes, he was a little geeky, and no, he didn’t look like the part of a suave sidekick, but Tru realized that she wouldn’t trade him for the world. Standing up, she ambled towards him and planted a kiss on his cheek.

Surprised, Davis glanced up. “What was that for?” he stumbled out.

“For being there for me. I don’t know why you do it, but I appreciate it more than you know. If I ever lost you, I don’t know what I would do.”

Davis nervously placed a hand over hers and appeared to relax when she didn’t pull away. “Your mother risked her life for me. It’s the least I can do.”

Tru’s dark eyes stared directly into his. “Thank you.”
